Kálmán Tihanyi, a Hungarian physicist, electrical engineer and inventor, first developed thermal cameras, commonly confused with night-vision cameras, in 1929. Although Tihanyi’s invention was developed specifically for Britain’s anti-aircraft defenses at the time, the possibilities of the thermal camera were realized and pushed into multiple applications through the coming decades. Today, thermal cameras serve both military and non-military purposes across a wide spectrum. Thermal camera technology is now incorporated into different services such as building inspections, medical thermography, astronomy, fire detection, and security. Some variations of thermal cameras also sport the ability to read temperature measurements which helps in identifying electrical issues and hazards with power generation and distribution equipment.

Thermal cameras capture images based on the heat that is projected by an individual or object and are not affected by sensitivity issues other cameras faced when operating under variable lighting conditions. That being said, thermal cameras by definition are the de facto solution when detecting heat-producing objects, such as humans and vehicles, arriving on extraordinarily poor-lit, or completely dark locations. Perfect as an additional security measure for industries that often have less than optimal lighting conditions, thermal cameras ensure the detection of intruders is maintained even in complete darkness.
Like all variations of cameras, the quality of the image the camera is taking in does not always translate into high-resolution video in a monitoring environment. Industries that are prone to theft and damages that can have tremendous economic effects across the country, such as utilities and critical infrastructure, require the highest quality, uninterrupted security video streams in order to maintain site integrity.
