Security devices are often exposed to harsh environmental elements like rain, snow, ice, and dust. It’s important to ensure that security equipment is kept safe from outdoor hazards and using NEMA rated enclosures on all of our security devices does just that. The NEMA rating is a quality standard for protecting electrical components from various environmental hazards.

What is NEMA?

NEMA stands for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, an organization that develops quality and safety standards for over 700 electrical products. At NEMA, business leaders, electrical experts, engineers, scientists, and technicians come together to create and implement these standards.

The NEMA Enclosure Rating System: Setting The Standard

The NEMA Enclosure Rating System provides a baseline for where electrical enclosures can be safely used in various environments. The rating depends on a variety of factors that dictate how well the enclosure protects its electronics from liquid, rain, ice, corrosion, dust, and debris exposure.

For example, the type and quality of materials used to build the enclosure are critical. NEMA provides key advantages to both manufacturers and consumers by providing assurance on the durability and safety of electrical components used in products. A NEMA rating means that the electrical components are safe from the environment, and that anyone near the unit is safe from the potentially dangerous electrical components inside.
Additionally, the NEMA rating states what the unit can physically handle. This prevents damage to the unit or any individual who may come into contact with it. This in turn provides peace of mind so you don’t have to worry about the elements like inclement weather, debris and other environmental factors affecting the security of your property.

What are our security device enclosures rated at?

Our remote video monitoring units & wireless alarm systems utilize NEMA Type 4X rated enclosures. This makes our units safe for both indoor and outdoor use in any climate, warm or cold. Additionally, the Type 4X rating protects from various liquids such as; rain, sleet, snow and splashing water, while also protecting from solid objects like dirt, dust and any ice that may form on or around the unit. The Type 4X means, not only are the electrics protected from environmental hazards, but are protected from corrosion as well.

The big picture:

The security and safety of your property is of utmost importance to our team. This is why we utilize NEMA 4X Rated enclosures on our current generation of remote video monitoring units, and all syncroDetect wireless alarm systems.
